Have you heard of Online Dispute Resolution? It’s often called ODR in short.
As technology continues to advance and permeate every sector, the process of resolving disputes is also undergoing a gradual transformation, becoming increasingly automated and accessible.
Online Dispute Resolution refers to a broad set of technologies meant to either supplement or replace ways in which people have traditionally resolved their disputes. ODR shares and builds upon the foundational characteristics of Alternative Dispute Resolution, emphasizing easier and more efficient methods of addressing conflict.
How Online Dispute Resolution Works
ODR has been used successfully in several countries. For example, eBay has used it to resolve over 300 million disputes between buyers and sellers. The process is being facilitated through the use of various ODR techniques such as E-Mediation, E-Negotiation, and E-Arbitration.
These automated systems rely on computer-driven data collection, developed at an advanced level to provide customized services to the involved parties.
ODR is yet to be adopted in Nigeria. However, it would be a valuable tool for the Nigerian judicial system. It could help to reduce the number of cases that go to court. It could further help to resolve disputes more quickly and efficiently and would save costs.
Conclusion
The Nigerian government should consider introducing ODR into the judicial system. ODR could help to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the judicial system, and it could help to make justice more accessible to the people of Nigeria.
